Lined with over 170 buildings, the canal waters reflect the grandeur and beauty created by the Republic of Venice.
The San Marco district, the center of Venice, houses the most notable landmarks Piazza San Marco (St. Mark’s Square) with its Cathedral of St. Mark, Palazzo Ducale (Doge’s Palace) and Campanile di San Marco. At almost 99m (325ft), the Campanile is the city’s tallest building offering a bird’s eye view.
St Mark Square is also the heart of Venice’s mid-winter carnival celebrations (going on now). The annual world-famed festival fills the city with cloaked and masked figures creating a very special atmosphere.
Venice’s is home to some great museums including the Galleria dell’Accademia, the Peggy Guggenheim, Ca’Rezzonico and the Museo Civico Correr. With so many great things to see and do, it’s no coincidence that the city in its entirety is listed as a World Heritage Site, along with its lagoon.
