The Best Time to Visit Europe

Europe is a diverse and enchanting continent with a rich tapestry of cultures, histories, and landscapes. Deciding the best time to visit Europe depends largely on what you hope to experience. Each season offers unique experiences, and the optimal time to visit can vary by region and personal preference.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is a beautiful time to visit Europe. The weather begins to warm up, and flowers bloom, bringing life to parks and countryside. Popular destinations like Paris, Amsterdam, and London are less crowded compared to the peak summer months. Spring is ideal for exploring the outdoors, visiting gardens, and enjoying festivals like the Tulip Festival in the Netherlands or the cherry blossoms in Japan.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is the peak tourist season in Europe, and for good reason. The weather is warm, and there are numerous outdoor events, festivals, and activities. Coastal destinations such as the French Riviera, the Amalfi Coast in Italy, and the Greek Islands are at their best, offering pristine beaches and vibrant nightlife. However, be prepared for large crowds and higher prices.

Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is another excellent time to visit Europe. The weather is still pleasant, and the summer crowds have thinned out. The changing leaves create picturesque landscapes, particularly in places like Bavaria, the Loire Valley, and the Scottish Highlands. Autumn is also a fantastic time for wine enthusiasts, with many wine regions celebrating harvest festivals.

Winter (December to February)

Winter in Europe is magical, especially if you enjoy festive atmospheres and winter sports. Christmas markets in Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic are a highlight, with charming stalls, festive lights, and seasonal treats. The Alps and Pyrenees offer world-class skiing and snowboarding. Cities like Prague, Vienna, and Salzburg are particularly enchanting with their historic architecture blanketed in snow.

How to Unlock a Cell Phone and Enabling Roaming

Unlocked Phone Downloading an eSIM

Introduction

Cell phones have become an essential part of our lives, keeping us connected with loved ones, work, and the world at large. However, if you are traveling internationally and want to use a roaming SIM card, you need to unlock your cell phone and enable roaming. Unlock a cell phone to use it with different carriers like OneSimCard. Enabling roaming ensures that you can use your phone’s services when traveling abroad. In this comprehensive guide, we will discuss how to unlock a cell phone and turn on roaming for International use.

Part 1: Unlocking Your Cell Phone

Unlocking a cell phone is a process that allows you to use your phone with different carriers, providing you with more flexibility and cost savings – especially when roaming internationally. Here’s how to unlock your phone:

1. Check if your phone is eligible:

Not all phones can be unlocked, and the eligibility criteria may vary from carrier to carrier. Typically, you need to have fulfilled your contract or paid off the device, and your account should be in good standing.

2. Contact your carrier:

Reach out to your current carrier to inquire about unlocking your phone. They will guide you through the process and provide specific instructions based on your phone’s make and model. Carriers often have online forms or customer service hotlines for unlocking requests.

3. Use a third-party unlocking service:

If your carrier is uncooperative or you’re unable to meet their criteria, you can consider using a third-party unlocking service. There are many reputable companies that offer unlocking services for a fee. Make sure to do your research and choose a reliable service.

4. Unlocking through software:

Some phone models can be unlocked using software tools or codes that are readily available online. However, this method can be risky and might void your warranty or damage your device, so proceed with caution.

5. International use and traveling:

Ensure your phone is compatible with the networks in the country you’re visiting. We often hear from customers that their phone isn’t connecting and this is because they have a phone that isn’t compatible in that country with the frequencies being used by the carriers in that country. Be very careful and do your research!

6. Check for limitations:

Some unlocked phones may have limitations, especially if they were originally carrier-branded. For example, some carrier-specific features or apps might not work on a different network.

7. Complete the process:

Once your phone is unlocked, you will receive a confirmation message or notification. At this point, you can insert or download a SIM card from OneSimCard and enjoy the benefits of a more flexible phone.

Part 2: Enabling Roaming on Your Cell Phone

Roaming allows your phone to access cellular services from other networks while you’re in a location where your carrier doesn’t have coverage. Here’s how to enable roaming:

1. Contact your carrier:

The simplest way to enable roaming is to get in touch with your current carrier. They can activate it for your account, and you’ll receive instructions on how to enable or disable it on your phone. Be very mindful of excessive roaming fees from your carrier, especially when traveling internationally.

2. Check roaming packages:

Carriers often offer international roaming packages that provide reduced rates for calls, texts, and data when you’re abroad. Inquire about these packages and choose one that suits your needs if you plan to travel frequently.

3. Enable roaming on your phone:

The exact steps to enable roaming may vary depending on your phone’s operating system (iOS, Android, etc.), but generally, you can find it in your phone’s settings. In most cases:

For iOS devices, go to “Settings,” then “Cellular” or “Mobile Data,” and toggle the “Data Roaming” option.

For Android devices, navigate to “Settings,” “Network & Internet,” and “Mobile network,” then enable “Data roaming.”

4. Be mindful of data usage:

Roaming can be expensive, especially when it comes to data usage. To avoid unexpected charges, monitor your data usage closely, and consider disabling data roaming when not needed.

5, Understand call and text charges:

While roaming, calls and text messages may also incur extra charges. Check with your carrier for details on the rates and consider using messaging apps and VoIP services like OneSim VoIP to reduce costs. We talked about using VoIP in a previous post here.

6. Use Wi-Fi:

Whenever possible, connect to Wi-Fi networks to save on data usage. Most places around the world offer free or paid Wi-Fi services, which can be a more cost-effective way to stay connected.

7. Prepaid SIM cards:

In most cases, it is more cost-effective to purchase a prepaid SIM card in before you go abroad. This allows you to use your device while roaming internationally for less cost than using your carrier’s roaming plans. For example, if you are using Verizon in the USA, they charge $10.00 per day for international roaming plans. If you are going to the EU for 2 weeks, this will cost $140.00. With OneSimCard, you can purchase an eSIM with 10,000MB for 14 days for $59.00 + $9.95 for the eSIM…a HUGE Savings!

8. Stay informed:

Keep an eye on your phone’s signal strength and check that you are connected to a network. Ensure that you have a roaming signal.

9. Deactivate roaming when not needed:

To save on battery life and prevent accidental data usage, turn off roaming when you’re back in your home country or in an area with good network coverage.

Conclusion

In conclusion, unlocking your cell phone and enabling roaming are important steps to ensure you can use your device more flexibly, both at home and when traveling. By following the guidelines in this comprehensive guide, you can navigate these processes with ease, enjoying the convenience of staying connected wherever you go, while also being aware of potential charges and best practices for using your phone abroad.

OneSimCard also provides world-class support for it’s customers. We are more than happy to work with our customers to help them unlock their cell phone and guide them to enable roaming features. Please reach out to us any time!

What’s the Best Choice: Cellular Voice vs VoIP When Traveling?

Image of the OneSim VoIP app making an international call using VoIP when traveling
Using OneSim VoIP when traveling

Introduction to VoIP When Traveling

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has revolutionized the way we communicate, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional cellular voice calls, especially while traveling. In an era where connectivity is essential, VoIP has emerged as a powerful tool for staying in touch without breaking the bank. Here, we explore the reasons why using VoIP is less expensive than cellular voice when traveling, delving into the economic advantages and technological advancements that make VoIP the smarter choice for globetrotters.

Cost Savings: A Primary Consideration

Traveling often means navigating different cellular networks and international roaming fees. Cellular voice calls can become exorbitant, with carriers charging substantial rates for international usage. VoIP, on the other hand, utilizes the internet to transmit voice data, bypassing traditional phone networks and their associated fees. Services like Skype, WhatsApp, and Zoom allow users to make voice calls for free or at significantly reduced rates compared to cellular providers. Cellular providers range wildly depending on the country and provider. We see costs range from $0.30USD to over $2.00 per minute for cellular voice, but a minute of voice is typically less than 1MB and we see international roaming rates under $0.01/MB for data. This upfront cost savings is a compelling reason for travelers to opt for VoIP.

Global Connectivity Without Borders

VoIP operates over the internet, making it a borderless communication solution. Unlike cellular voice, which requires compatible networks and roaming agreements, VoIP connects users seamlessly regardless of their geographical location. This feature is especially beneficial for travelers, as they can maintain communication with friends, family, and colleagues without having to worry about international restrictions or network compatibility. Whether on a business trip or a leisurely vacation, VoIP ensures uninterrupted connectivity at a fraction of the cost.

Wi-Fi Dominance

Modern travel destinations, whether hotels, cafes, airports, or public spaces, invariably offer Wi-Fi connectivity. VoIP leverages these ubiquitous Wi-Fi networks to establish voice connections. Travelers can take advantage of free or low-cost Wi-Fi options to make VoIP calls, eliminating the need for expensive cellular voice plans. This symbiotic relationship between VoIP and Wi-Fi amplifies the cost-saving benefits, allowing users to communicate conveniently without the burden of extra charges.

Inclusive Services

VoIP services frequently bundle features that further enhance their value proposition. Video calls, text messaging, and multimedia sharing are often included alongside voice calls. Such comprehensive services eliminate the need for separate applications and subscriptions, simplifying the communication process for travelers. In contrast, cellular voice calls typically offer limited additional functionalities at higher costs, making VoIP a more versatile and budget-friendly choice.

Advancements in VoIP Technology

The continual evolution of VoIP technology has solidified its position as a cost-effective alternative to cellular voice. High-speed internet connectivity has become more accessible and reliable worldwide, ensuring stable VoIP connections even in remote locations. The development of codecs and compression algorithms has optimized voice data transmission, reducing bandwidth requirements and enhancing call quality. These technological advancements contribute to VoIP’s cost-effectiveness by minimizing data consumption and maximizing the efficiency of voice communication.

Evolving Smartphone Apps

Smartphone apps have become integral to modern travel, offering navigation, translation, and currency conversion at the touch of a button. VoIP applications have seamlessly integrated into this ecosystem, enabling users to make calls directly from familiar platforms. As these apps continue to improve their user interfaces and functionalities, travelers find it increasingly convenient to use VoIP for their communication needs. The integration of VoIP with other essential travel apps further solidifies its cost-effective appeal.

Not All VoIP Apps Are Equal

OneSimCard developed the OneSim VoIP app for their customers to make VoIP when traveling even easier.  Our coverage, usability and rates are the main benefits of our VoIP app. Even if, by rare chance, you happen to find yourself in a place where our SIM card has no service, you can use Wi-Fi with our VoIP app with your Personal Extra Number (PEN).

Our VoIP app also doesn’t require the other person to have the same app. You can use the OneSim VoIP app to call any phone in the world. Unlike other VoIP apps like WhatsApp, Facetime, etc. the person you are calling, or getting a call from, is just any phone…no special apps needed.

Using the OneSim VoIP app is also very cost effective. Wherever you are in the world the cost to recieve a call is only 1¢/minute. Outgoing calls depend where you are calling to. USA and Canadian numbers, for example, are only 2¢ per minute to call. The best news is calling between OneSim VoIP users is absolutely FREE!!

Customization and Flexibility

VoIP services often provide customizable plans tailored to different user needs. Travelers can select pay-as-you-go options, prepaid plans, or subscription-based models, allowing them to choose the most suitable and cost-effective arrangement. This flexibility empowers travelers to manage their communication expenses efficiently, avoiding the unpredictability of cellular voice charges.

Security and Reliability

Security concerns associated with VoIP have significantly diminished as encryption and authentication technologies have matured. Many VoIP services now offer end-to-end encryption, ensuring the confidentiality of voice calls and data transmission. Moreover, the reliability of VoIP has improved over time, with enhanced call quality and fewer disruptions. Travelers can confidently rely on VoIP for important conversations, knowing that their communications are secure and dependable.

Conclusion

In the realm of modern communication, VoIP has emerged as a cost-effective alternative to cellular voice, particularly when traveling. The substantial cost savings, global connectivity, reliance on Wi-Fi, inclusive services, technological advancements, and evolving app ecosystems collectively position VoIP as the more affordable and practical choice for travelers. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, embracing VoIP while on the move presents a compelling case for those seeking effective communication solutions without the burden of excessive expenses.

Planning a trip soon? OneSimCard offers both Physical SIMs and eSIMs for all of your needs when traveling internationally. We also have a custom VoIP app available for Android and iOS devices. The OneSim ViOP app, coupled with our Personal Extra Number (PEN) will let you stay in touch with family and friends regardless of where you travel. Our SIMs will also work with your favorite VoIP app, like WhatsApp, Facetime, FB Messenger, Telegram, etc., if you already have one.

The Magic of Mendoza, Argentina & the Vendimia

Selection of Malbec wine bottles on display

Are You planning travel to Argentina? Thinking about places to visit and when to go? We have a great recommendation for you! One of the most important festivals in Argentina takes place at the end of February through the first week of March. The Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia (The Grape Harvest National Festival) celebrates the most important export of Mendoza, and perhaps all of Argentina…wine.

Settled in 1561 by Pedro del Castillo, the city of Mendoza  is a relatively small city. It even feels smaller because of it’s quaint tree lined streets, and welcoming locals. The population of Mendoza center is 115,000 but climbs to 1 Million if you include the “metro” area. It encompasses 21 square miles and sits at 2,400 feet above sea level. The region is best known for it’s wine and olive oil production, especially for growing Malbec grapes. Because of it’s diverse terroir, Mendoza boasts some of the best Malbec wine in the world. Its varying bouquets are based on assorted soil, altitude and temperatures. Grapes are grown here from 2000 feet to 5000 feet above sea level. Nicolas Catena Zapata is the person who pioneered growing at such high altitudes since 1994.

The Vendimia

The Vendimia attracts thousands of South American artists, tens of thousands of tourists (especially wine enthusiasts) to Mendoza.  They celebrate all 18 of the provinces that make up the State of Mendoza.

Celebrations aren’t limited to just this time, though. All through the month of February each of the 18 provinces of Mendoza have celebrations and ceremonies related to the wine harvest. This time of year is very special for the entire region. You will be able to have very unique experiences during the wine crush. We suggest roaming around the outlying areas of Mendoza center too. Enjoy lots of wine tastings, rent bicycles or hire a driver and take a tour of the whole region.

This year the schedule of the Vendimia is from February 26 through March 6th:

February 26th –  ‘Blessing of the fruits’ ceremony.

March 3rd –  1st parade of Vendimia ‘Queens’ competing for the title of “Queen of Vendimia”, crowding the city streets, throwing fruit and even giving out bottles of wine.

March 4th –  ‘Carousel of Vendimia’ This is a morning time parade featuring cowgirls in traditional outfits on horseback

Night of March 4th – The ‘Central Act’ is a fabulous production including over 1000 participants, and ends with the coronation of the ‘Queen of Vendimia,’ and with fireworks from the nearby Cerro de la Gloria in General San Martin park. This is the quintessential celebration when Mendocinos (what the locals refer to themselves as) and visitors take to the streets and parties to share the local elixir.

March 5th –This is a repeat performance of the previous night with additional Argentinian and international artists.

March 6th– A third night repeating the grand finale celebration with additional national artists.

Getting There

Depending on your itinerary you can fly into Mendoza ‘s international airport “Aeropuerto Internacional Gobernador Francisco Gabrielli” (MDZ). This traveler chose to first fly into Santiago, Chile where we stayed a few nights to explore that area before flying from Santiago, over the Andes, to MDZ. Argentina also has great bus lines, and there are even first class lie flat seats available from Buenos Aires for less than $100…but make sure to book a window seat to get great views of the countryside!

What is the Best Travel eSIM Card & Why?

Phone that includes eSIM.

We discussed eSIMs (embedded SIM cards) in a previous post. eSIMs aren’t all created equally, though. An “international eSIM card” is a bit of a misnomer. International / travel eSIMs are the of roaming SIMs as physical SIMs move into the past. The reason for the change is because device manufacturers save space on the device by replacing the physical SIM and it with eSIM technology. eSIMs are probably better called “SoftSIMs.” They are simply nothing more than a piece of software downloaded into devices enabled to understand this technology. What makes for the best travel eSIM then?

The world is becoming more and more data centric, so most eSIM providers only include data usage, They don’t bother to support voice or text. However, voice and text remain important for the international roaming SIM market. The growth of data centric applications like WhatsApp, Facetime, Telegram, Skype, etc. are changing the way providers deliver their services. You can communicate with friends and family, post messages and even place video calls with data only. This doesn’t work well for the international traveler, and is a major problem/flaw. It forces the international traveler to use another provider to place calls and send and receive SMS. This is because these roaming eSIMs don’t include a phone number. Without a phone number you can’t call your Uber driver, talk to your bank, call the restaurant that you are running late, etc.

This is where OneSimCard international eSIMs really stands out. Our international eSIMs support Data, Voice & Text messaging. Our SIMs include an EU based phone number and you can also choose alternate phone numbers (Personal Extra Numbers, or PENs). You can get in-country phone numbers in 70+ destinations with OneSimCard eSIMs.  You can set your alternate number as your caller ID so that your phone appears to be a local caller. What’s more is you can get a USA phone number that is a true mobile number. This USA mobile number allows you to receive 2FA verification messages required by banks, the IRS, and pretty much any other US company.

Usability is another important feature making an eSIM the best international eSIM.  eSIMs should be simple to install and have flexible plans. Flexibility is key as travel patterns. Meant for a single country, most eSIMs aren’t flexible because you can’t move between countries. OneSimCard eSIMs are designed to be used over and over for years, and in many different countries. Our plans are flexible; even in a single trip. We also offer 2 different eSIMs: our World eSIM for the greatest # of destinations, & our Asiania eSIM for use especially in Asia and Oceania.

The amount of support and applications available from the eSIM provider is the last factor for rating travel eSIM cards. OneSimCard is one of the only international eSIM providers with its own VOIP app (available in Google Play and Apple APP Store)for US and Canadian phone numbers to reduce the cost of Voice and Text services. OneSimCard also has eSIM apps in Apple App store and Google play. You can manage all aspects of your travel eSIM right in these apps. Multi-lingual customer service is also available by phone, email and online.

You need to read the fine print and look at the reviews for eSIM service providers before you buy. There has been a rapid growth in this space, and COVID forced some closed. We have been in business for over 27 years, and have a 4.5 star rating with Shopper Approved with 2500+ reviews.

Discovering Slovenia: Trekking and Treats

Lake Bled and the Church of the Mother of God on the Lake
Lake Bled & Church of the Mother of God on the Lake

One of our favorite, just beginning-to-be-discovered, countries is Slovenia. Nestled between Italy to the West, Austria to the North, Croatia to the South and Hungry to the West, Slovenia offers many activities for everyone. Many travelers enjoy the great trekking and skiing offered. However, there is also a lot of history, culture and culinary offerings available. We think the best time to enjoy Slovenia is in early fall. This is when tourism is slowing and the crowds have dissipated from the hot spots, but there is still plenty to do.

An average day in Slovenia may include a morning hike in the Julian Alps or along the many beautiful lakes or rivers. Then a visit to a museum for an afternoon. Finally, a fantastic dinner to top off the day. Prices in Slovenia are still very reasonable, especially in the more rural villages. Even the larger cities like the capital, Ljubljana, have lots of shops, restaurants and activities at very reasonable prices

A magical town to spend a day or two is Bled. Its proximity to activities, the restaurants and sheer beauty of its surroundings make it a must see. You can take a walk around the lake (the Lake Bled Loop Trail) which is a 3.7 mile (6 km) easy hike. At the end of the hike, enjoy a walk through Castle Bled and enjoy some local food and drink in the courtyard while overlooking the iconic Church of the Mother of God on the Lake. If you are feeling a little more adventurous, you can take a short trip to the Triglav National Park. Slovenia’s only National Park is a sight to behold where you can challenge yourself a little more with the moderate to expert hiking and climbing offered in the Julian Alps.

Entrance to Hisa Franko Casa
Hisa Franko Casa in the morning fog

Another must-do if you are a bit of a foodie, is to visit Hisa Franko Casa, located in Kobarid. When the Michelin Guide to Slovenia came out in 2019, Hisa Franko received 2 stars. It known for locally sourced, sustainable food. Hisa Franko is also listed as #21 of the top 50 restaurants in the world. (According to worlds50best.com) Ana Roš, the owner/Executive Chef, along with her husband Valter, operate this impressive restaurant which also has rooms to stay the night (highly recommended). There is also great hiking and a lot of WWI history in the town. We recommend the WWI museum in town and hiking nearby in old WWI bunkers and trenches.

All-in-all, Slovenia is a must visit country, especially for those with a love of nature, and delicious cuisine. But don’t worry…Slovenia is also a very well-connected country for technology as well. This makes sharing your gorgeous pictures of the hikes you take and food you eat easily shared when you use your OneSimCard International SIM. We suggest the Universal or eSIM World. This is because of the data packages available for Solvenia, like the 14 day 10,000MB EU data package for $57.00USD. So pack your bags, insert your roaming SIM card from OneSimCard, and enjoy the beauty of Slovenia!
